Fuscospora fusca - tawhai, tawai, red beech

Southern beech family: Nothofagaceae

Fuscospora fusca  is a large forest tree with thick furrowed bark that often has buttress at the base of the trunk.  Leaves are slightly leathery to the touch and have  long pointed marginal teeth. Formerly placed in the genus Nothofagus.
An endemic species found from the middle of the North Island to the lower South Island.
