Megaherbs of the Subantarctic Islands
The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands lie between latitudes 47 and 53 degrees south. They consist of five groups: the Snares Islands/Tini Heke, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands/Motu Maha and Campbell Island/Motu Ihupuku and the islands surrounding it.
In the Subantarctic Islands there are ten endemic species of flowering plants that exhibit unusually large leaves and are referred to as megaherbs. With their large size and often striking flowers they comprise an important component of the biodiversity of the region. Seven species are illustrated.
