Tridontium tasmanicum is a robust moss with branched, wavy stems 2-8 cm tall. Leaves are 2-4 mm long with a characteristic rounded apex, spoon-shaped because of the incurved margins. The sporophyte stem (seta) is 1-2 cm long, bearing a cup-shaped capsule with a wide mouth. The operculum has a long, slanting beak and the peristome consists of 16 short, yellowish teeth.
Widespread throughout New Zealand on damp soil and wet rocks.
