Tortula marginata is a small moss, 2-3 mm in height, that forms tufts or rosettes of 1.75-2.25 mm long leaves that have a characteristic pale border of elongated cells. The yellowish nerve slightly protrudes beyond the leaf tip.
Found in New Zealand only in four sites, all in Auckland City, on moist, shaded walls, limestone and the mortar of buildings.
