Macromitrium microstomum has long creeping stems with short upright branches. The leaves are an olive-green, narrow with tapering points (acuminate) and glossy when dry. The stalk (seta) of the sporophyte is 4-18 mm in length. The calypra (capsule covering) lacks hairs and is deeply lobed at the base.
Found throughout New Zealand on the trunk or branches of smooth-barked trees such as beech or on rock.
