Zygodon intermedius forms 5-25 mm tall mats of green, yellow or red-brown, branching stems. Leaves are lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 0.6-1.8 mm long and spreading when moist with papillose (nipple-like projections) surface cells. When dry, leaves are not strongly twisted and often curve to one side of the stem. The sporophyte stalk (seta) is 2-8 mm long and bears an 8-ribbed cylindrical capsule. The peristome is rudimentary or lacking.
Widespread in New Zealand on bark and rock.
