Orthotrichum sp are short to tall, erect, densely or loosely tufted. The stems are branched and bear narrow, spreading leaves when moist that become erect and slightly twisted when dry. The leaf vein (costa) fails below the sharply-pointed (acute) leaf apex. The capsule elevation varies from being immersed in the leaves or raised above the leaves (exserted).
Represented in New Zealand by 9 species, four of which are endemic.
