Alleniella hymenodonta has flattened stems with branches absent or few. A distinctive feature of the leaves is their marked transverse wrinkling, dry or moist. Leaves are 1.7-2.5 mm long with a sharp apex and a faint and short forked vein (nerve). The stalk (seta) of the sporophyte is short to that the capsule is held close to the stem and is immersed among the large perichaetial bracts. Also known as Neckera pennata)
Widespread in New Zealand forming loose patches on trees, boulders and rock cliffs.
