Grimmia pulvinata forms compact cushions up to 10 mm high. The leaves are closely spaced and overlapping, up to 2 mm long and with long hair points. Young capsules are held in an inverted position among the leaves becoming erect and positioned above the leaves when mature. Mature capsules have a wide mouth and eight faint furrows.
Widespread in New Zealand on exposed rock.
