Schistidium apocarpum plants have an olive-green to reddish-brown colour with stems stems 0.5-5 cm in height. Leaves are errect-appressed and a hyaline hair point may or may not be present. Capsules lack an obvious stalk (seta) and immersed in the surrounding leaves.
Widespread in New Zealand on scoria walls, rock, in or near streams but also in drier sites.
