Funaria hygrometrica is a small short-lived moss with soft leaves crowded toward the stem tip. The leaves are wide and oval with a sharp tip and have a vein (nerve) that extends to the leaf tip or beyond. The capsules have a distinctive pear-shape with the calyptra sitting at an angle to one side. The peristome is also distinctive in that the tips of the outer ring of teeth are joined together in the centre and the inner teeth are opposite the outer teeth rather than alternating.
Found throughout New Zealand on bare soil, clay pots and shade houses.
