Fissidens taxifolius plants are yellow-green to dark green, often growing in dense mats. Stems are 5-10 mm tall and branched only at the base. Leaves are in 10-15 paris, and irregularly inrolled when dry. The leaf vein reaches the leaft tip or is prolonged into it. This species is unusual in having the archegonia located at the base of the stem, on very short shoots.
A widespread, introduced moss that favours moist, disturbed sites. Common in the north of the North Island and from scattered localities further south
