Rhynchostegium muriculatum is a small creeping and branching moss with spreading, 1 mm long leaves. The seta (stalk) is papillose and the capsule lid (operculum) has a long beak.
Widespread in New Zealand in damp areas on soil, rotting wood and as an epiphyte in open forest.
