Philonotis tenuis is a moss with reddish stems 1-4 cm in height with a faint tomentum that is especially well developed in wet sites. Leaves are about 1 mm long, dull grey-green and narrowly triangular in shape. The leaf margin is often curved downward and the nerve (vein) projects beyond the leaf tip. Miniature leafy shoots (brood bodies) are sometimes produced on the upper part of the stem.
Widespread in New Zealand on damp soil and rock.
