Leptobryum pyriforme forms bright green patches with slender, branched stems. The lower leaves are narow, triangular and distantly spaced on the stem. Leaves near to the tip are much longer, spreading out and have a sheathing base. The bases of the stem bear matted purple rhizoids and bear small ovoid tubers. A pear-shaped, pendulous capsule is borne at the end of a red seta (stalk). Also placed in the Bryaceae.
Common throughout New Zealand on soil, scoria and in plant pots in shade houses.
