Chiloscyphus muricatus is a smaller plant than Chiloscyphus villosus. Leaf tips are strongly divided into two (bifid) the dorsal surface has a dense covering of echinae (conical projections) with few present on the ventral surface. Underleaves are divided into two diverging lobes.
Found throughout New Zealand in lowland to lower montane forest, often epiphytic on rotting wood.
