Balantiopsis diplophylla var hockenii has prostrate to erect many-branched stems. The leaves have a distinctive pale green to light brown colour and are sharply folded. The upper fold is much smaller, lying near the base of the larger main lower lamina; margins bear cilia but relatively few especially on the upper lobe compared to the type variety. The underleaves are bifid (2-lobes) and are smaller and more deeply bifid than in var. diplophylla.
Endemic to New Zealand, found in damp to relatively dry sites often near streams.
