These free-floating ferns have a symbiotic relationship with colonies of the cyanobacterium, Anabaena azollae, located in pouches in their leaves.
The bacterium obtains organic compounds from the fern and converts atmospheric nitrogen into organic compounds that are utilised by the fern.
