Notogrammitis crassior - dwarf strap fern


Family: Polypodiaceae

Notogrammitis crassior has a long-creeping stem (rhizome) forming compact mats of short, winged fronds.
Found on the ground or on rock in alpine areas on the North Island but descending to lower levels in the far South.
Formerly known as Grammitis poeppigiana, G. armstrongii.
 

Vegetative characteristics

Fertile frond and sporangia

Plant form: erect stem bearing fronds up to 30 mm

Frond appearance: similar to sterile frond

Frond stalk, midrib: stipe indistinct

Sporangium location: lower frond surface, close to frond tip

Frond shape: spoon-shaped, rounded at tip

Sporangium position: in one row either side of midrib

Frond blade: undivided

Sporangia distribution: in groups (sori)

Frond surface: thin, dull

Sorus shape: elongated, in pairs

Leaflets: 0

Sorus covering: 0
