Lindsaea viridis

Family: Lindsaeaceae

Lindsaea viridis is a terrestrial fern with a creeping stem (rhizome) bearing erect, narrow to elliptic, yellow-green fronds with broad, blunt-ended leaflets.

An uncommon endemic fern found on the North Island and western lowland forest of the South Island on rocky, damp shady stream banks.
 

Vegetative characteristics

Fertile frond and sporangia

Plant form: creeping rhizome with fronds up to 30 cm in length

Frond appearance: similar to sterile frond

Frond stalk, midrib: brown

Sporangium location: lower frond surface

Frond shape: narrow elliptic

Sporangium position: leaflet margin

Frond blade: 2-3- pinnate (divided 2-3x into leaflets or pinnae)

Sporangia distribution: in groups (sori)

Frond surface: glossy

Sorus shape: linear (continuous)

Leaflets: narrow, oblong with blunt-ended tip   

 

Juvenile characteristics:

Sorus covering: reflexed marginal flap opening towards leaflet margin
