Blechnum penna-marina subspecies alpina is a small fern with a creeping stem (rhizome) bearing a horizontal circle of bronze-green sterile leaves and erect fertile leaves up to twice as long as sterile .
Found in coastal and lowland forest throughout New Zealand.
